Inflation Data Drifts US Stocks, Bonds

US Stocks and Bonds Drift as Inflation Data Exceeds Expectations

US stock markets saw minimal movement on Thursday, August 27, after new data indicated that inflation last month was slightly higher than economists had predicted. Yields in the bond market, a recent area of concern for investors, edged upward following the inflation report. This national economic trend has implications for Aiken County residents, particularly those invested in the stock market or managing personal finances.

The S&P 500 experienced a slight dip of less than 0.1%, remaining near its all-time high achieved earlier in August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 113 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq composite decreased by 0.1%. These minor shifts occurred ahead of a highly anticipated earnings report from Nvidia, a key player in the artificial intelligence sector, which was released after the trading day concluded. Nvidia’s substantial profit growth, driven by the AI boom, has established it as the largest stock by value in the US market. However, AI stocks have recently shown volatility due to concerns about inflated prices and potential softening demand for chips if AI does not yield expected profits.

Strong profit growth across a broad spectrum of US companies has been a primary driver for the stock market’s record performance this year. Abercrombie & Fitch saw a significant jump of 35.7% after reporting stronger-than-expected profits for its latest quarter and raising its full-year earnings forecast. J.M. Smucker also climbed 4.3% after exceeding profit expectations for the spring. Conversely, Intuit, the company behind TurboTax and QuickBooks, fell 3.2% despite surpassing profit expectations, as its forecast for nearly 25% profit growth in the upcoming fiscal year did not meet analysts’ projections.

Outside of earnings, Meta Platforms increased by 1.1% after agreeing to a settlement of up to $18 billion and committing to implement child-safety measures on Facebook and Instagram. This agreement resolves claims filed by states across the country regarding teen social media addiction. Overall, the S&P 500 closed at 7,675.70 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 53,463.88, and the Nasdaq composite at 26,130.20.

In the bond market, Treasury yields rose following updates on inflation and economic growth. Yields had previously surged throughout the summer due to concerns about high inflation and the increasing national debt. The US Treasury Department made a surprise announcement last week to intervene in the bond market, though analysts suggest its impact may be limited. The inflation measure preferred by the Federal Reserve stood at 3.7% last month, consistent with June’s rate and slightly above the 3.6% economists anticipated, according to FactSet. This figure remains considerably higher than the Fed’s 2% target. Consumer spending growth, a key economic driver, simultaneously slowed. The overall economy expanded at an annual pace of 1.5% in the spring, matching the government’s initial estimate. The 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 4.65% from 4.64% on Tuesday.

Traders largely maintained their forecasts for the Federal Reserve’s short-term interest rate decisions, with a nearly three-in-four chance of at least one rate hike by year-end, according to CME Group data. Higher oil prices have contributed to inflation this year, though they have recently declined. Brent crude, the international standard, fluctuated on Wednesday due to uncertainty surrounding the war with Iran and its impact on oil tanker access to the Persian Gulf. It settled at $86.94, a 0.4% decrease from the previous day and down from $94 at the end of last week. International stock markets saw gains across Europe and Asia, with South Korea’s Kospi rising 1% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 increasing 0.6%.
