Greens: Bermuda

Oldest golf course in South Carolina and one of the oldest in the United States. Founded 1892, Alister MacKenzie redesigned the layout in 1932 — three years before he completed Augusta National. The Stanford White-designed clubhouse dates to 1902. Located just 17 miles from Augusta National, Palmetto opens to public play one week per year during the Masters.

Stanford White clubhouse (1902). MacKenzie redesign three years before Augusta National. Masters Week access is the only public window.

Pro Tip
MacKenzie greens are tilted to repel the ball — never aim at the flag. Play to the safe side of every green and trust two-putts. Sandy soil drains fast; the course plays firmer than its yardage suggests.

Greens: Bermuda

One of the oldest public courses in South Carolina, opened 1912. Jim McNair Sr. and his family restored the historic layout in the 1990s, recovering classic features including small, well-bunkered greens and the distinctive routing through Aiken's Highland Park district. Voted one of South Carolina's best-kept secrets in golf.

Under 6,000 yards from the tips. Compact routing rewards shot-making over distance. Walking-friendly historic feel.

Pro Tip
Don't let the short yardage fool you — small, fast greens punish wedge play that doesn't spin. Hit one less club into the greens and take advantage of the receptive landing areas short.

Greens: Bermuda

Arthur Hills design opened 1991, fully renovated 2015–2016 by owner/superintendent. At 7,206 yards from the gold tees with a 142 slope, Cedar Creek is the longest and toughest test in Aiken County. Routed through pine forest with significant elevation change and water in play on multiple holes.

Highest slope rating in Aiken County (142). Renovated 2015–2016. Eight tee sets ranging from 4,387 to 6,939 yards.

Pro Tip
Cedar Creek demands accuracy off the tee — pine corridors punish miss-hits. Play one tee forward of your handicap; a 142 slope from the gold tees will eat up the average golfer's scorecard.

Greens: Bermuda

Joe Lee design with 27 holes arranged in three nines (Foxhound, Sandlapper, Kennelworth). Members and guests of the Inn at Houndslake have access. Mature tree-lined fairways, deep bunkering, and Lee's signature green complexes make this one of the most respected layouts in western South Carolina.

27 holes in three nine-hole loops. Hosts SC Golf Association events. Inn-guest play available.

Pro Tip
Joe Lee designs reward positional play over power. Plot your way around using fairway woods and long irons off the tee on tight nines like Foxhound — driver into the wrong landing area leaves you blocked out.

Ellis Maples design opened 1961, eight miles west of downtown Aiken in Graniteville. Classic mid-century routing with tree-lined fairways, traditional bunkering, and modest greens. A staple of Aiken-area golf for over 60 years with a loyal local membership.

Walking-friendly traditional layout. Annual member-guest is one of the longest-running tournaments in the region.

Pro Tip
Ellis Maples designs are about precision iron play. The greens are smaller than modern designs — favor the center of every green and let your putter do the work.

Greens: Bermuda

Jim Fazio design opened 1998 along the Savannah River in North Augusta, 20 minutes from downtown Aiken. Water on 10 holes, including the signature par-3 17th — an island green ringed by water and bunkers. Multiple risk/reward par 5s, including the reachable 9th and the 601-yard 18th finishing hole.

Island-green par 3 on #17. Railroad trestle adjacent to #16. Water in play on 10 of 18 holes.

Pro Tip
On the par-3 17th, the island green plays slightly downhill and the wind off the river is deceiving. Take an extra half-club and aim for the middle — never short-side yourself.

Aiken Golf Course Reviews

Palmetto Golf Club
Tom • May 29, 2026
Got lucky enough to play during Masters Week — only time it opens to the public. The MacKenzie greens are exactly what you would expect from the man who designed Augusta National three years later. Walked it. Bermuda fairways were spotless.
Memorable Hole: Hole #6 -- the short par 4 over the creek
Toughest Green: Hole #9 -- false-front green that fed everything back to my feet
Best Food: Pimento cheese sandwich at the halfway house
Aiken Golf Club
Caroline • May 27, 2026
Walkable, affordable, and historic. Hard to find a more charming public course in the Southeast. The old Highland Park clubhouse with the Babe Zaharias photos is worth the visit by itself. Played from the white tees in just under three hours.
Memorable Hole: Hole #12 -- short par 3 with the elevated downtown skyline view
Toughest Green: Hole #15 -- the tilted green that feeds left
Best Food: Burger at The Legends Grille — they make it the way the old hotel guests would have remembered it
Cedar Creek Golf Club
Mark • May 25, 2026
Arthur Hills routing is fantastic. Played from the tips at 7,206 and got humbled. The water comes into play more than you would think from looking at the card. Pro shop staff was outstanding — Chase set us up with a great group of locals.
Memorable Hole: Hole #18 -- the long par 5 with the second-shot decision over the lake
Toughest Green: Hole #7 -- the long par 3 into the prevailing wind
Best Food: Hot dog and a cold beer at the turn
Houndslake Country Club
Jennifer • May 23, 2026
Played the Sherwood/Hounds nine combo as a guest. Conditions were country-club quality top to bottom. The three nines give it more variety than most courses in the area. Brought the whole family — pool and tennis kept everyone busy after.
Memorable Hole: Hole #4 on Sherwood -- the dogleg around the pond
Toughest Green: Hole #8 on Hounds -- elevated green over a swale
Best Food: Club sandwich on the patio overlooking 18

Hit Them Long...
Longest drive. Craziest shot. Hole in one. Brag about it.
Marcus
Drew a 3-wood off the tee, then went all-in with hybrid from 225 over the right corner of the dogleg. Carried the front bunker, released to 12 feet. Drained the putt for eagle. Cedar Creek's bermuda greens were rolling true that morning — Tom Jackson built those subtle breaks to reward a confident stroke.
Cedar Creek Golf Club -- Hole #15 -- 511-yard par 5 doglegging right Eagle
Caroline
Smooth 9-iron, one bounce, disappeared. My foursome went silent for two full seconds before everyone lost their minds. First ace at a club Alister MacKenzie laid out in 1892. The Palmetto pro shop framed the scorecard for me — still hangs in my office.
Palmetto Golf Club -- Hole #6 -- 138 yards over the bunkers Hole in One
Wyatt
Striped a driver off that elevated tee box and the ball just kept going. Caught the firm fairway slope and rolled out to 322 yards on a 415-yard hole. Pitching wedge in. Birdie. The river view on that hole already makes it the prettiest tee shot in the CSRA — adding career-best yardage to it didn't hurt.
The River Golf Club -- Hole #12 -- downhill par 4 along the Savannah River, breeze at my back Longest Drive
Mix Them Strong...
Your favorite 19th hole. Where do you go after the round?
Mike
Built right into the Aiken Golf Club clubhouse — old Highland Park Hotel bones, photos of Babe Zaharias and the Turnesa brothers on the walls. You can sit on the patio and watch groups finish on 18.
The Legends Grille -- Cold draft and a burger
Brian
Eastgate Drive sports bar — big screens, cold beer, wings that are actually crispy. Locals show up after late tee times and stay through whatever game is on.
Grumpy's Sports Pub -- Whatever IPA is on tap
Kelly
Craft beer and kombucha in The Alley. Quieter than Tailgate but the beer selection is the best in town. Good for two pints and a long conversation about your round.
The Alley Downtown Taproom -- Whatever craft is on the rotating tap list

Aiken Golf FAQ

Common questions about golf in the Aiken area, answered.
  • The First Tee of Greater Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) also serves the region.

HEREAiken’s golf desk covers every course, every tournament, and every story relevant to golf in Aiken County and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Aiken is one of the most storied small golf towns in America — home to Palmetto Golf Club (founded 1892, the oldest course in South Carolina, redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in 1932, three years before he completed Augusta National) and Aiken Golf Club (1912, one of the oldest public courses in the state). Coverage spans the private layouts (Palmetto), the semi-private clubs (Houndslake Country Club, Midland Valley Country Club, Cedar Creek Golf Club, The River Golf Club in nearby North Augusta), and the historic public access at Aiken Golf Club.

Tournament coverage tracks the SC Golf Association events hosted at Houndslake, the Palmetto Golf Club Masters Week invitation events every April, SC Junior PGA events, Carolinas PGA pro-am stops, Carolinas Golf Association amateur championships at regional venues, and the SC High School League golf calendar for Aiken County programs (South Aiken, Aiken, North Augusta, Midland Valley, Silver Bluff, Wagener-Salley, and Ridge Spring-Monetta). Just 17 miles down the road, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament drive massive April golf tourism to Aiken — the town has been a winter colony for golfers, equestrians, and northerners since the late 1800s, and Masters Week remains the highest-demand hotel week of the year. Coverage also tracks course-condition reports after CSRA weather events from the National Weather Service Columbia office, club-pro hires, course renovations, and the small-business sponsorships flowing to junior-golf programs across Aiken County.
