AIKEN, S.C. — A driver was killed Wednesday morning when a car ran off Silver Bluff Road, slid down a slope into a tree and burst into flames, Aiken County officials said.
The crash scene sits along S.C. 302 near Mossy Tree Lane, along the 3300 block of Silver Bluff Road. Investigators said the 2023 Subaru was heading east when it drifted off the right side of the highway and dropped down an embankment before striking the tree.
The coroner’s office got the call at about 10:23 a.m., and at 10:55 a.m. the driver was declared dead where the car came to rest. Coroner Darryl Ables said burns kept his office from identifying the driver right away.
Officials plan an autopsy in Newberry, which should settle the identity question and show how and why the driver died.
Only one vehicle was involved. Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are working the case alongside the coroner, and officials have not said what sent the car off the road.
