Langley Pond is the largest publicly accessible fishing pond in Aiken County and the most consistent year-round bass and bream water in the Aiken city footprint. Operated by Aiken County Parks and Recreation, the pond receives regular SCDNR stocking of largemouth bass, bluegill, and redear sunfish, and is the host site for the Carolina Bass Series club tournaments.

Boyd Pond sits inside the 280-acre Boyd Pond Park complex and offers shoreline-friendly bass, bream, and crappie fishing minutes from downtown Aiken. The pond is electric-motor-only, which keeps the water quiet and the surface fishable for topwater all year.
Free public access via Boyd Pond Park. Gravel launch suitable for kayaks, canoes, and small jon boats. Multiple bank-fishing spots and a short fishing pier. Park gates close at sunset.
Hounds Lake is the in-city fishing option for residents on the west side of Aiken. The lake supports a mixed warm-water fishery of largemouth and spotted bass with strong bream and channel catfish populations.
Bank fishing access from public road frontage. Carry-in boats only (kayaks/canoes). No public concrete ramp. SC freshwater fishing license required for anglers 16+.
Holley Lake is a small public pond in south Aiken known locally for bluegill and warmouth panfish, with a resident population of largemouth bass. Suited to bank anglers and kids.

Cabin Lake and the three smaller park ponds at Aiken State Park give anglers a quiet, blackwater fishery on the upper South Fork Edisto River corridor. The park is also the put-in for the South Fork Edisto canoe trail (see separate entry).

The Savannah River forms Aiken County's western boundary and is the region's premier big-water fishery. Striped bass run upriver from spring through fall, and the river holds trophy-class blue catfish in the deep holes below Augusta. Multiple public boat ramps on the SC side give anglers full access to the river from New Savannah Bluff downstream.

The South Fork Edisto runs through Aiken State Park and offers a 1.7-mile marked canoe trail with bank-fishing pull-outs. Blackwater conditions make this a fly-rod and ultralight river for redbreasts, panfish, and the occasional pickerel.

Yes. All anglers age 16 and older need a SC fishing license to fish public waters in Aiken. SC residents pay $10 for an annual freshwater license. Non-residents pay $35 annually or $11 for a 3-day license. Licenses are available at SCDNR.sc.gov or at local sporting goods and tackle shops. Two Free Fishing Days — May 25 (Memorial weekend) and July 4 — require no license.

Aiken County's public fishing waters are mostly county-park lakes plus the Savannah River corridor. Langley Pond (~270 acres) is the largest and best for largemouth bass and crappie. Boyd Pond (Boyd Pond Park) is the most accessible family fishery, with bank access, a pier, and consistent bream and bass. Hounds Lake and Holley Lake are smaller community-managed waters in the area. Aiken State Park's cabin lake offers a quiet bank-fishing option inside the park. None of the Aiken County public lakes require a municipal boating permit — a standard SC fishing license is sufficient.

The best crappie fishing in Aiken County is during the spring spawn — typically late March through April when water temperatures reach 55-65 degrees F. Fish move shallow (2-6 feet) around brush, stumps, and dock pilings. Langley Pond and Boyd Pond are the most productive local spawn lakes. A second, smaller run occurs in fall (October-November) when fish stage deeper at 12-18 feet as the water cools. Verify current SCDNR season status at dnr.sc.gov before targeting crappie.

The Savannah River along Aiken County holds largemouth bass, striped and hybrid striped bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, bluegill, redbreast, and crappie in slack-water sections — striper fishing below lock-and-dam structures can be very strong in spring. The South Fork Edisto, a designated canoe trail through Aiken State Park, is best known for redbreast sunfish, bream, largemouth bass, and the occasional pickerel. The Savannah is a reciprocal water (SC or GA freshwater license accepted); the South Fork Edisto requires a standard South Carolina freshwater license.

SCDNR's stocked-trout program is concentrated in the upstate; Aiken County is not part of the routine put-and-take trout stocking schedule. The closest reliably stocked trout water is well north of Aiken. Check the current SCDNR freshwater trout stocking report at dnr.sc.gov each season to verify which waters near you (if any) receive fish that year. The standard SC trout bag limit is 5 per day during stocking season — confirm with SCDNR before fishing.
