History
Wagener was incorporated in 1888 and developed as a market town serving the agricultural communities of southeastern Aiken County. The town's name honors a local settler family. The establishment of Wagener-Salley High School consolidated the attendance area for this portion of the county, and the school's athletic programs — particularly football — became a source of community pride that persists today.
