Houndslake presents a quieter, less corporate feel than Woodside Plantation — it is a community built around 27 holes of golf spread across three nine-hole loops (Dogwood, Azalea, and Laurel nines), a private lake for fishing and recreation, and the Inn at Houndslake, which brings visitors into the community and supplements the club's event revenue. Homes tend to be traditional brick single-family residences built largely in the 1980s and 1990s, reflecting the community's established vintage. The housing stock is solid and well-maintained, though not at the new-construction premium level of Woodside. The atmosphere is neighborly and unpretentious — residents tend to be long-term Aiken residents, SRS workers and retirees, and local professionals who value golf access and the lake without the formality of a gated grand-entrance community. Hounds Lake itself supports a population of largemouth bass, bluegill, spotted bass, carp, and channel catfish, giving residents a fishing option literally within their neighborhood.
History
Houndslake Country Club was established in 1974, part of a wave of golf community development that swept the Sunbelt during the 1970s. The Joe Lee golf course design — Lee was a prominent Florida-based golf course architect of the era — reflected the era's preference for parkland-style layouts with water features and strategic bunkering. The community grew steadily through the late 1970s and 1980s as Aiken County's population expanded with SRS contractor workforce growth. The Inn at Houndslake added a hospitality dimension that helped the club weather cycles in golf participation, and the lake has remained a consistent community asset.
