Beech Island is an unincorporated census-designated place in the western portion of Aiken County, situated along the Savannah River approximately 12-15 miles southwest of downtown Aiken. The community straddles US-278 (the road to Augusta GA) and Atomic Road, with proximity to the Savannah River Site buffer zones to the south. Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site at 181 Redcliffe Road is the community's most prominent landmark. The Bridgestone Americas Beech Island facility and the Kimberly-Clark Beech Island plant are both major manufacturing employers in this zone, contributing significantly to Aiken County's manufacturing employment base. History
Beech Island's history is tied to the Savannah River bottomlands that were heavily cultivated during the plantation era. Redcliffe Plantation, built by South Carolina Governor James Henry Hammond in the 1850s, is one of the most complete antebellum plantation complexes surviving in South Carolina, now operated as a SC State Park. The post-WWII period brought massive industrial development: Bridgestone (originally the Aiken plant of a predecessor company) and Kimberly-Clark established operations that grew into facilities of national significance.
