Fans and performers in the Grand Strand area are reflecting on the enduring legacy of country music star Dolly Parton, whose connection to the region began in the early 1990s. This reflection comes as her influence continues to be felt through those who admire her work and character.
Parton’s presence in the Grand Strand started with the opening of her dinner attraction, The Dixie Stampede, in the early 1990s. This venue was later rebranded and reopened as Pirates Voyage in 2011, continuing her entertainment footprint in the area.
Karen Hester, a Parton tribute performer since 2011, described her role as something that came to her naturally, expressing deep admiration for Parton’s character and faith. Hester noted that Parton was a beautiful person who loved everyone and did not judge, a quality Hester feels they share due to their strong faith.
For Hester, connecting with audience members after shows and hearing how Parton impacted their lives is a cherished part of her performances. She explained that continuing these shows evokes a range of emotions as she strives to uphold Parton’s memory. Hester emphasized her desire to honor Parton’s legacy in a way that would make Parton proud.
Hester also highlighted Parton’s ability to make people feel seen, welcomed, and connected through her music, maintaining a consistent personality both on and off stage. She stated that Parton always wanted people to feel like part of her family, and that consistency in her true self was a significant reason for her widespread adoration. The loss is felt deeply, as if losing a family member, Hester added.
