AIKEN, S.C. — Handmade quilts, a sidewalk vigil and a story hour for the youngest readers are on the calendar in Aiken as the new week begins.
The longest run belongs to the Carolina Pine Quilters, whose 46th annual show opens Tuesday, Oct. 20, inside the Aiken County Historical Museum and stays up through Friday, Nov. 13. The museum is at 433 Newberry Street SW, and the guild suggests calling 803-642-2015 to check its hours first.
On Monday, Oct. 19, two groups, Moms Demand Action and Aiken Women in Black, plan a peace and nonviolence vigil from 5 to 6 p.m. at the entrance to Aiken Estates, across Whiskey Road from the Fresh Market. Organizers say to use the Hitchcock Drive entrance, bring a nonpartisan sign or borrow one, and bring a chair if standing is hard.
Families with children up to age 5 can head to the Aiken County Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for Read, Rattle and Roll. The session pairs a story with ocean-themed play, and Help Me Grow S.C. will share how to start free developmental screenings. The library is at 314 Chesterfield St. S.W.
