WARRENVILLE, S.C. — A 19-year-old Warrenville man died and a second man was wounded in a shooting late Sunday morning, and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as Hunter L. Derrick. Deputies were sent around 11:30 a.m. to the area where Cemetery Road meets Bayberry Street and found both men with at least one gunshot wound each.
Each was taken to WellStar MCG Health, where Derrick died at 12:31 p.m. His autopsy is planned in Newberry next week. Authorities gave no age or condition for the surviving man beyond saying he was still being treated.
Investigators and forensic teams worked the scene Sunday. No arrest had been announced and no suspect description released, and the sheriff’s office described its work as being in the early stages.
Any charges would be prosecuted by the 2nd Circuit solicitor’s office, which handles criminal cases for Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. Tips go to the sheriff’s office by phone at 803-642-1761.
