AIKEN, S.C. — An Augusta man is facing multiple drug-related charges after an Aiken County Sheriff Office deputy stopped a vehicle in Aiken on Oct. 9.
Police reports say the deputy stopped a vehicle after a Georgia DMV records check returned that the vehicle had no insurance. During the stop, the deputy smelled what was suspected to be marijuana.
The driver, Willie Jones Jr., 46, of Aiken, told the deputy there were drugs in the car and did not have a valid driver license, according to the reports. Passenger Michael Mangrum, 43, of Augusta, retrieved a bag containing a leafy green substance from his pants pocket and two more bags from beneath his seat.
Both men were arrested and taken to the Aiken County Detention Center. The vehicle, owned by a third passenger, was towed.
Major Jason Griffon with the Aiken County Sheriff Office said Mangrum received additional drug-related charges after more substances were found once he arrived at the jail, including oxycodone and Xanax pills.
Mangrum was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of a controlled substance and possession or manufacture of a substance, plus possession of contraband for entering the jail with drugs in his possession.
