Aiken and the broader Upstate South Carolina region are experiencing a continuation of summer heat, with dangerous triple-digit heat index values expected through the week. The National Weather Service has issued warnings about the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration, advising residents to exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities.
Temperatures in the region are forecast to reach the high 90s, with the heat index potentially hitting 102 degrees on Wednesday, September 2, and rising to 104 degrees on Thursday, September 3. This unseasonably hot and muggy weather is expected to persist, impacting areas including Aiken County, where residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor work.
Some relief is anticipated towards the Labor Day weekend. A weak cold front is expected to bring possible rain and thunderstorms from Saturday, September 5, through Labor Day, September 7. These conditions could help lower temperatures into the mid-to-high 80s by Monday, September 7. However, long-range outlooks from the National Weather Service suggest that above-normal temperatures have a 50-70% chance of continuing through at least mid-September.
The detailed forecast for the region indicates sunny and hot conditions for Wednesday, September 2, with a high near 97 degrees and a heat index of 102. Overnight will be mostly clear with a low around 74. Thursday, September 3, will also be sunny and hot, with a high near 97 and a heat index up to 104, followed by a low around 73 overnight. Friday, September 4, maintains sunny and hot weather with a high near 97 and an overnight low around 74.
As the weekend approaches, Saturday, September 5, has a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m., with a high near 97. The chance of storms continues before 8 p.m. overnight, with a low around 72. Sunday, September 6, brings a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., and a high near 90, with overnight lows around 69. Labor Day, September 7, is forecast with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, partly sunny skies, and a high near 86, with an overnight low around 66.
