The University of South Carolina system has reached a record enrollment of over 60,300 students this year, with preliminary figures for fall 2026 showing increases across its campuses, including the University of South Carolina Aiken. This milestone reflects a growing interest in the university system, which serves students from across South Carolina, the nation, and the world.
The Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina is approaching 42,000 students, marking its largest enrollment in its 225-year history. This includes a new freshman class of approximately 7,800 first-year students, with more than 4,100 from South Carolina. The freshman class comprises students from all 46 counties in the state, 45 states, and 41 countries, representing over 2,100 high schools. About 1,110 South Carolina students in the freshman class were in the top 10% of their graduating class, and approximately 100 were high school valedictorians.
Overall student population at the Columbia campus is approximately 41,650, with preliminary total undergraduate enrollment at more than 33,000. These figures represent increases of 2.5% and 3.3%, respectively, over fall 2025 enrollment. University President Michael Amiridis stated that these record numbers indicate students and their families recognize the value of a USC degree, highlighting accessible, affordable, and high-quality education, career-focused pathways, and a strong student experience.
Beyond the flagship campus, preliminary enrollment figures at USC’s two-year and four-year institutions also show growth. More than 6,700 students are enrolled at USC Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter, and Union. The University of South Carolina Aiken, along with the Beaufort and Upstate campuses, collectively enrolls roughly 12,000 students. Scott Veryzl, vice president for enrollment management and dean of undergraduate admissions, noted that drawing students from all 46 counties underscores USC’s role as the state’s flagship university and its commitment to serving families statewide. He also observed an increasing number of students from outside South Carolina choosing USC for its academic opportunities, student experience, and sense of belonging.
