Woman Hospitalized After Pack of Dogs Attack in Charlotte

Woman Hospitalized After Pack of Dogs Attack in Charlotte

A woman remains hospitalized as of Thursday following a dog attack that injured four people in a Charlotte neighborhood on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred on Claiborne Woods Road, where a pack of seven pit bull-type dogs, estimated to be about one year old, reportedly mauled the woman in her front yard.

Home surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene, including what sounded like a gunshot and screams as the woman attempted to fend off the animals. A neighbor, Joseph Correa, heard her cries for help and intervened with a shovel, shouting for her to get inside. He described a loved one assisting the woman, who was then dragged indoors with visible blood.

Another victim, Angela Johnson, was also attacked while taking out her recycling after hearing the initial screams and calling 911. She reported being grabbed by the arm and gnawed at her leg, sustaining wounds that required five stitches and a rabies shot. Johnson stated she had never seen these dogs in the neighborhood before and seeks accountability for the incident.

A Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s deputy, who was in the area executing an eviction, responded to the commotion. After an attempt to use a Taser failed to stop the assault, the deputy shot and killed one of the dogs. The remaining six dogs were subsequently captured alive.

Surveillance video from four houses down the street showed several dogs tumbling out of a U-Haul truck just minutes before the attack. Investigators are working to confirm if these were the same dogs involved in the mauling. The owner of the dogs had not been located as of Thursday. However, the landlord of the home where the eviction was taking place indicated that the tenant housed several dogs, though it is unclear if they were the ones involved in the attack. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control is actively investigating the incident alongside local law enforcement, with officers seen speaking to the landlord on Thursday afternoon.
