AIKEN, S.C. — An Aiken County, S.C., deputy was shot and run over, and a woman died, after a Monday afternoon confrontation that ended in gunfire on Scotch Lane, Sheriff Marty Sawyer said.
Deputies had responded earlier Monday to convenience-store calls involving a gray Chevrolet truck, including a hit-and-run at a RaceWay on Columbia Highway North near Interstate 20. Investigators tied the truck to Amanda Buckner, 38, who lived in the 300 block of Scotch Lane.
When deputies later encountered the truck, Buckner struck a patrol vehicle and drove off, sparking a short chase that ended on Scotch Lane off Powell Pond Road, according to SLED and the sheriff. After the truck stopped, authorities said Buckner opened the driver’s-side door and opened fire. Deputy Ethan Crosby, on the job a little more than a year, was shot in the lower extremities and then run over. Staff Sgt. Kevin Canalejo and Crosby returned fire, Sawyer said.
Buckner was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers and died at 5:06 p.m., the coroner’s office said. Crosby was taken to Wellstar MCG in Augusta and was recovering. An autopsy was planned later in the week in Newberry.
SLED is investigating at the sheriff’s request. SLED said the Aiken County shooting is the 31st officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the third this year for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
