This late-summer heatwave is driven by an expanding heat dome that could encompass Upstate South Carolina, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
The forecast indicates that above-normal temperatures could persist through mid-September. Weather models suggest a stubborn hot pattern for the state this week, with dangerous triple-digit heat index values anticipated across much of the low terrain each afternoon. Temperatures are projected to climb into the mid-to-upper 90s by September 1 and 2, with heat index values in the high 90s to low 100s likely through September 4, due to dewpoints in the low 70s.
While there is a slight possibility of a weak cold front moving through between September 4 and 5, confidence in this relief is low. Even a small drop in dewpoints, however, would offer a noticeable break from the heavy, sticky heat. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and stay hydrated during this period of elevated temperatures.
Looking ahead, the National Weather Service’s 8-14 day outlook shows a 50-60% chance of above-normal temperatures across South Carolina from September 7-13, indicating a prolonged late-summer heat pattern. Although meteorological fall officially began on September 1, and the first official day of fall is September 22, the El Niño pattern this year could contribute to South Carolina experiencing hotter-than-usual conditions well into September.
