AIKEN, S.C. — Voters returned four sitting members of the Aiken County Board of Education to office on Tuesday, Nov. 3, while the outcome in District 6 is still unknown because that race was decided entirely by write-in ballots.
Jim Broome in District 2, Brian Silas in District 3, Barry Moulton in District 5 and Patrice Rhinehart-Jackson in District 7 had no opponents in the nonpartisan contests. The tallies stay unofficial until certification.
Broome drew 4,771 of 4,897 votes cast in his race and heads into a second term. Silas, on the board since 2018, collected 5,027 of 5,286. Moulton, also first elected in 2018, received 4,635 of 4,772. Rhinehart-Jackson, who joined the board through a 2019 special election, finished with 3,257 of 3,419.
District 6 covers Attendance Area Three, which takes in much of Midland Valley. Incumbent Liz Morris landed in a write-in race after the county Registration and Elections office found her ballot petition had only 32 valid district signatures, short of the 50 required. Christy Spradley also ran as a write-in.
The district has 10 precincts, and 1,397 write-in votes were recorded there, including 728 on Election Day, 662 in early voting and seven absentee. Those ballots had not been sorted by candidate Tuesday night.
The board governs the Aiken County Public School District, one of the largest employers in the county.
