AIKEN, S.C. — Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said Kenneth Newton, 46, of Aiken died after two SUVs crashed Thursday night at Wagener Road and State Park Road.
The wreck was reported about 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 15. Newton was behind the wheel of a 2021 Toyota Highlander that struck a 2018 Kia Sorento at the rural intersection east of the city.
Authorities said Newton had no seat belt on and was thrown from his SUV. Medics and deputies found him dead at the site at 10:34 p.m.
A postmortem exam is planned in Newberry while troopers reconstruct the sequence of the collision.
The coroner’s office is working the case alongside Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious roadway fatalities statewide.
Wagener Road feeds traffic toward state park access and nearby neighborhoods, and evening travel on the corridor mixes local drivers with through trips across Aiken County.
