Summer 2026 becomes highest-grossing box office of all time

The summer of 2026 became the highest-grossing summer movie season in U.S. box office history, with domestic ticket sales from May 1 through Labor Day on September 7 reaching $4.76 billion, according to figures from tracking firm Rentrak. The tally surpasses the long-standing 2013 record of $4.755 billion, which had been anchored by Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 2 and Man of Steel, and marks the industry firmest signal since the pandemic that moviegoers have returned to theaters in scale.

The 2026 summer benchmark comes with two important caveats. First, the 2013 ticket sales that had held the previous record were not adjusted for inflation, so real ticket-price growth accounts for part of the nominal gain. Second, the summer moviegoing window in 2026 was slightly longer, running 130 days compared with 123 days in 2013, because of where Labor Day fell on the calendar. Even adjusting for those factors, the milestone is significant because it comes after five years of uncertainty about the theatrical business.

Admissions numbers, not just dollars, also climbed. Box office statistics firm EntTelligence reported that admissions during the summer 2026 window exceeded 322 million, well above the 275 million admissions in summer 2025. The 2026 summer was also the first on record in which each of the four core calendar months generated more than 1 billion dollars in domestic sales, with May at $1.07 billion, June at $1.08 billion, July at $1.18 billion, and August at $1.276 billion.

The season was driven by an unusually deep bench of hits across studios and genres. Sony and Marvel Studios Spider-Man: Brand New Day dominated the pop-culture calendar. Universal The Odyssey sold out 70mm IMAX tickets a year in advance and cleared expectations. A24 horror release Backrooms set the studio all-time opening record with $81.4 million and became its highest-grossing title ever at $197.5 million domestic. Focus Features Obsession, Lionsgate Michael, Disney Toy Story 5 and other titles filled out a schedule that gave theaters strong weekly output all season.

Distributors and exhibitors credit a resurgence of younger moviegoers as a central driver of the record. According to Screen Engine/Rentrak survey data, Backrooms drew 55 percent of its audience from viewers under 25, Spider-Man: Brand New Day drew 51 percent, and Obsession drew 38 percent.
