Aiken area football fans following the Carolina Panthers 2026 season opener countdown, which begins in 18 days, are seeing former cornerback Chris Gamble highlighted as the 18th greatest player in team history. This ranking is part of a new Top 100 Panthers of all time list, a departure from previous countdowns that focused on current players by jersey number.
Gamble, drafted 28th overall in 2004 out of Ohio State, immediately became a starter for the Panthers. In his rookie season, he recorded 75 tackles, six interceptions, 14 passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Despite these statistics, he did not receive any votes for Defensive Rookie of the Year. His 2005 season was statistically strong, with a career-high seven interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
His performance in 2008 solidified his reputation, with advanced statistics showing he allowed only a 51.3% completion percentage against him and a 58.4 opponent passer rating when targeted. The Panthers front office recognized his value, awarding him a six-year, $53.5 million contract extension in November of that year.
The 2010 season was challenging for Gamble due to a high ankle sprain, causing him to miss several games and marking the first time in his career he went without an interception. He rebounded in 2011, leading the NFL in target rate, with opposing quarterbacks testing him on only 9.1% of drop backs. When targeted, opponents managed a passer rating of 61.2, indicating his effectiveness.
Gamble’s final NFL season was 2012, cut short by a torn labrum. He retired after being released by the Panthers for cap purposes.
