With 14 days remaining until the Carolina Panthers kick off their 2026 season against the Chicago Bears, a recent countdown series has highlighted former safety Mike Minter as the 14th greatest Panther of all time. This recognition comes as the team prepares for its opener, a significant event for football fans across the region, including those in Aiken who follow professional sports.
Minter, drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft, quickly established himself as a key player. After serving as a backup for the first five games of his rookie season, he took over the starting safety position and held it for the next ten years. During his rookie year, he recorded 83 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries. Despite a staph infection impacting his second season, Minter consistently remained on the field, starting 126 out of 128 games between 1999 and 2006.
Known for his physical presence and playmaking ability, Minter concluded his career with 17 interceptions, 12 forced fumbles, and 11 fumble recoveries. He was particularly adept at returning turnovers for significant yardage, averaging nearly 25 yards per interception return and scoring four touchdowns. His 421 interception return yards remain the most in franchise history, nearly 100 yards more than the second-place player. His four pick-sixes are second only to Captain Munnerlyn’s five.
Minter retired in 2007 due to persistent knee issues. He holds a top-five ranking in franchise history for tackles, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and interceptions. Following his NFL career, Minter remained in the local area, coaching high school football in Concord for several years before serving as the head coach for Campbell University, located south of Raleigh, for a decade. His impact on the Carolina Panthers’ secondary is widely regarded as substantial, embodying the team’s playing style during the 2000s.
