As August approaches and vacation plans solidify, ensuring your garden remains vibrant while you are away requires proactive steps. David Denyer, a florist and garden expert, offers four key strategies to maintain plant health, especially if a neighbor is not available to assist with watering and care.

One crucial tip is to relocate potted plants from direct sunlight. Even plants that typically thrive in summer sun can dry out quickly and wilt when left unattended in intense heat. Moving them to a shadier spot before departing can prevent rapid dehydration.

Deadheading flowering plants is another important task, particularly for trips longer than a few days. Denyer notes that plants can grow rapidly, and removing faded or finished blooms with clean, sharp pruning shears allows the plant to focus its energy on developing new seeds and buds rather than maintaining spent flowers. This practice also helps prevent the spread of disease.

A generous watering the day before leaving is essential to provide plants with a strong start. For potted plants with saucers, filling these with a small amount of water can offer additional hydration, though caution is advised to avoid overwatering, which can lead to soggy roots and the appearance of fungus gnats.

Finally, self-watering globes offer a convenient solution for continuous hydration. These devices drip-feed water to plants over an extended period. Larger globes generally provide more hydration. Denyer suggests they are particularly effective for indoor plants due to the ideal size-to-soil ratio. For outdoor use, he recommends creating a DIY version using a glass water bottle with a clay spike or cone attached. This setup releases water only when the soil is dry enough to need it, ensuring plants receive water as they become thirsty. Alternatively, small holes poked in the bottle cap can facilitate a slow, continuous drip.
