AIKEN, S.C. — The Salvation Army of Aiken has kicked off its yearly Red Kettle Campaign, and this season every kettle in the area will carry a QR code so shoppers who no longer carry cash can still give.
Leaders of the Aiken corps describe the holiday drive as a major fundraiser that supports close to half of the programs and services the organization offers in the area. Captain Michael Good, who leads the local unit, said the scan-to-give codes will link straight to an online donation page.
The kettle tradition dates back more than a century to San Francisco, where bell ringers collected coins at the docks to pay for Christmas dinners.
Volunteers are needed to staff kettles this season, and sign-ups are open at ringthebell.org. Online gifts can be made through salvationarmyaiken.org.
The Salvation Army of Aiken office is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached at 803-641-4141. The organization also runs its Angel Tree Campaign during the holidays.
