AIKEN, S.C. — The Aiken Hornets closed the regular season with a 46-28 win over crosstown rival South Aiken on Friday night at Aiken High School.
Aiken jumped out early and carried a 25-14 lead into halftime, then held off the Thoroughbreds in the second half of the regular season finale for both programs.
The win snapped a long drought in the series. Aiken had not beaten South Aiken in a decade going into the night, and the Hornets were also coming off a shutout loss against Irmo the week before.
Both teams entered the game at 2-2 in Region 5-4A play and both finish the regular season at 6-4 overall. Aiken ends third in the region at 3-2, while South Aiken, which had won its previous game against Midland Valley, finishes 2-3 in league play.
For second-year Aiken head coach Steve Hibbitts, the result gives the Hornets a rivalry win heading into the postseason picture. The South Carolina High School League playoff brackets come next for teams in Aiken County.
