AIKEN, S.C. — City leaders marked the completion of an $8 million primary runway resurfacing at Aiken Regional Airport with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday at noon.

The project replaced aging asphalt with high-strength concrete on the primary runway, a change officials said will extend the pavement lifecycle and improve operational reliability for aviation users.

Funding came from the Federal Aviation Administration plus state dollars appropriated by the South Carolina General Assembly and administered by the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission.

The ceremony was held on the airfield near the northern end of Runway 7-25. In case of bad weather, organizers planned to move indoors to the terminal at 129 Aviation Blvd.

Officials described the upgrade as a safety and reliability investment for the flying public and a milestone for local aviation infrastructure.

Project partners, elected officials and aviation stakeholders gathered to commemorate the resurfacing finish on Oct. 9.
