A driver died Thursday evening after a single-vehicle crash on Jaywood Road near Jackson Effie Road in Aiken County, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 5:45 p.m. Sept. 17 when a 2008 Lincoln MKZ traveling north left the roadway, struck a ditch and then hit a tree. The driver was the vehicle’s only occupant, and no other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
The driver’s identity had not been released as of Friday. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is expected to release identifying information once next-of-kin notifications are complete. Highway Patrol troopers are continuing to investigate what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The crash adds to a string of fatal single-vehicle wrecks reported across Aiken County in recent weeks, underscoring ongoing traffic safety concerns on rural roads in the area. No further details about road conditions or contributing factors had been released as the investigation continued.
