AIKEN, S.C. — One of Aiken’s most-traveled downtown intersections is closing Wednesday morning — but only briefly, and for an unusual reason.
The City of Aiken announced Monday that the intersection of Whiskey Road and South Boundary Avenue will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22. The closure is expected to last about an hour, according to city officials.
The reason: a dead oak tree at the intersection needs to come down. A contractor working with the city said the removal cannot be done safely while traffic is moving through the crossing, so the roadway will be shut just long enough to bring the tree down and clear the site.
Why this intersection matters
Whiskey Road is Aiken’s north-south commercial spine. It carries daily traffic between the northern shopping corridor, the medical district around Aiken Regional Medical Centers, and the historic South Boundary district. South Boundary Avenue — the tree-canopied stretch that gives that side of the city much of its character — intersects Whiskey at one of the highest-count crossings in town.
Even a one-hour closure on a Wednesday morning will push traffic onto side streets. Drivers heading between the University of South Carolina Aiken area, the Aiken County government complex and the Hitchcock Woods area should expect brief delays during the closure window.
Aiken’s oak canopy — an aging asset
The live oaks and older hardwoods that give South Boundary its distinctive tree-tunnel character have long been considered one of Aiken’s signature assets. But like other Southern cities with mature canopy — Charleston, Savannah, Augusta — Aiken has increasingly faced the question of what to do as those trees age out.
Dead-tree removals at intersections are a routine but sensitive piece of that work. City crews and contractors regularly assess canopy trees along South Boundary and other historic corridors and remove specimens that pose a safety risk to drivers or pedestrians.
The city did not release additional details on the specific tree being removed Wednesday or whether replanting is planned at the site.
