AIKEN, S.C. — All 73 Aiken County polling places are expected to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the general election. Roughly 400 poll workers will staff them until 7 p.m., according to Dana Burden, who directs elections for the county.
Burden said 37,446 county voters cast ballots early, a figure near 30% that she expects to carry into a solid Election Day turnout. Machines that had problems during testing were fixed, and any still in repair will stay off the floor. Technicians will be posted around the county, and voters who run into an equipment issue should tell an election worker.
Voters need a current photo ID at the polls. The state election commission accepts an S.C. driver license, a DMV ID card, a federal military ID or a Veterans Affairs benefits card. A voter without one can sign an affidavit citing a reasonable impediment and cast a provisional ballot using a non-photo registration card.
The county voting system is not connected to the internet, Burden said. After the polls close, clerks return scanner thumb drives to the elections office for upload, and the county will run hand-count audits that the public may watch.
