AIKEN, S.C. — The cross-town rivalry closes the regular season Friday night when the Aiken Hornets welcome the South Aiken Thoroughbreds to Aiken High School. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m., and with both teams sitting at 2-2 in 4A region play, a postseason berth hangs on the result.
South Aiken arrives with momentum. The T-Breds beat Midland Valley 35-21 at home on Oct. 23, a week after a 10-7 loss at North Augusta. Earlier in October they dropped a 38-14 decision to Irmo, the same opponent that shut out Aiken last week.
Aiken has not beaten South Aiken in ten years. Second-year head coach Steve Hibbitts said rivalry week takes care of motivation on its own, so his staff is sticking with the routine it has used all season and keeping the players loose, since they play their best when relaxed.
It is the final week of the regular season across the South Carolina High School League, which makes this the rivalry weekend for programs statewide. Check back Friday night for the final score.
