AIKEN, S.C. — Aiken City Hall will be bathed in teal light on Monday, Nov. 2, as the city joins a worldwide effort to draw attention to Alzheimer’s disease and the families living with it.
The building is one of several South Carolina landmarks on the list for Light the World in Teal, the yearly awareness drive organized by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Other participants in the state include the Governor’s Mansion in Columbia and the escalator rails at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. In all, more than 1,750 sites around the globe are signed up to light up that night.
The foundation holds the campaign each November during Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and teal is the color the group uses for the cause. Buildings and landmarks register to take part, and residents are invited to join in by wearing teal at home or work or by posting facts about the disease on social media.
The foundation puts the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s at more than 7 million, with about 112,000 of them in South Carolina. Federal health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention project the national total will double by 2060.
Families looking for help can reach the foundation’s support line at 866-232-8484.
