AIKEN, S.C. — Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Annie Andrews stopped in Aiken on Friday for a town hall pitched to Republican and independent voters less than two weeks before Election Day.
Andrews, a pediatrician, answered questions from the audience and laid out an economic message built around bringing down what families pay for fuel, food, housing and health care. The Aiken event was one stop on a statewide swing her campaign calls South Carolina You Can Afford, with Anderson and Seneca also on the schedule.
At the Anderson stop on the same tour, she said she would suspend the federal tax on gas and diesel in the short term and push to keep rural hospitals open.
No Democrat has won a U.S. Senate race in South Carolina since 1998, a streak Andrews is trying to end. Her campaign says a town hall in Winnsboro on Oct. 22 meant she had now visited all 46 counties in the state.
She faces Republican Sen. Darline Graham, who has pressed Andrews to release her tax returns as the race has grown sharper in its final weeks. Voters decide the seat on Nov. 3.
