AIKEN, S.C. — A charity dance contest that had been dormant for 13 years made its comeback Thursday night, Oct. 22, when Dancing with the Aiken Stars filled the Convocation Center at the University of South Carolina Aiken.
Twelve teams with 42 dancers in all took the floor, and every couple, trio or group performed on behalf of a different Aiken County nonprofit. Organizers put attendance at about 900 people.
Before the show, each team visited the agency it represented to learn about its programs, so the performers could speak up for those groups afterward. Organizers said strong community interest is what brought the event back.
Votes cast by fans, including people who were not in the arena, all went to the nonprofits. With more than 50,000 votes, Little Dudes and Dames finished first; that team represented the Mental Health America of Aiken Nurture Home.
