The Cross High School football team will forfeit its next three games following a significant on-field altercation that occurred on August 27. This decision stems from a combination of self-imposed sanctions by Cross High School and the South Carolina High School League’s (SCHSL) evaluation of individual player responsibility.
The forfeited games include matchups against Timberland High School, Lake Marion High School, and Bowman High School. The Berkeley County School District confirmed the forfeitures, noting that players from both teams involved in the August 27 incident were assessed. Due to Cross High School having a smaller roster, the impact of player unavailability from these assessments is more pronounced for their team.
In response to the incident, the Berkeley County School District stated its commitment to supporting student-athletes as they accept accountability and move forward. The district emphasized that the incident does not define the character of the young men or the culture of the Cross High School football program, with a focus on growth and moving forward when the team returns to the field.
Conversely, the Dorchester District 4 superintendent indicated that their team’s ability to play upcoming games was never in question after the fight and subsequent assessment. They expressed anticipation for their junior varsity game tonight and varsity game on Friday night, noting that any consequences from the SCHSL would be shared by the league.
While this incident occurred outside of Aiken County, the SCHSL’s involvement highlights the statewide standards for high school athletics. Local teams like Aiken High School and South Aiken High School, both members of SCHSL Region 5-4A, operate under similar guidelines regarding player conduct and game integrity.
