Chicago Bears Finalize Initial 53-Man Roster

The Chicago Bears announced on Sunday, August 30, a series of roster adjustments to meet the NFL’s mandatory 53-man roster limit. These moves included releasing and waiving several players, placing others on reserve lists, and activating one player.

Among the players released were running back Salvon Ahmed, tight end Stephen Carlson, defensive lineman Marcus Davenport, offensive lineman Wesley French, defensive lineman James Lynch, wide receiver Scotty Miller, and linebackers Jon Rhattigan and Jack Sanborn.

Players waived by the team included wide receivers Maurice Alexander, Kaden Davis, Omari Kelly, and JP Richardson; offensive linemen Kiran Amegadjie, Caden Barnett, Kyle Hergel, Jaren Kump, and Mason Murphy; tight end Qadir Ismail; defensive backs Anthony Johnson, Deantre Prince, Marlen Sewell, Terell Smith, and William Wright; defensive lineman Jeremiah Martin; linebackers Antonio Grier and Wayne Matthews III; and quarterback Miller Moss.

Additionally, defensive backs Beanie Bishop and Dontae Manning, along with linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II, were waived with an injury designation. Offensive lineman Jedrick Wills was released with an injury settlement.

The Bears placed several players on the Reserve/Injured list, including running back Brittain Brown, linebacker Tony Fields, defensive back Jaylon Jones, and wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III. Defensive back Kyler Gordon, linebacker Noah Sewell, and defensive lineman Shemar Turner were placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list.

In a corresponding move, punter Tory Taylor was activated to the active roster. The initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season includes players such as defensive backs Jaylon Johnson and Coby Bryant, running back D’Andre Swift, kicker Cairo Santos, and quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent. Aiken residents following professional football may note the extensive changes as teams across the league finalize their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.
