Jonathan Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, recently revealed details about what he called the weirdest negotiation of all time concerning his client’s future with the Golden State Warriors. Turner stated on August 29, 2026, that conflicting messages from head coach Steve Kerr and owner Joe Lacob created an uncertain environment for Kuminga.
Turner explained that Kerr publicly indicated Kuminga did not fit the roster alongside core players like Draymond Green, while the front office viewed him as a significant talent. This public declaration from a Hall of Fame coach, according to Turner, undermined any high-dollar offers the front office presented.
Kuminga, facing an unclear role under Kerr, chose the shortest possible deal to maintain his options, opting for a two-year, $24 million contract that included a guaranteed trade kicker. This was despite the Warriors countering with longer structures, including a three-year framework that could have guaranteed $48 million. Turner described the first half of Kuminga’s final year in Golden State as not a great scene.
The unresolved tension regarding Kuminga’s playing time and fit ultimately led to his trade to the Atlanta Hawks. After his stint with the Hawks, Kuminga entered free agency and recently agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Turner emphasized that the core issue was the public discrepancy between the front office’s valuation of Kuminga and the coaching staff’s view of his role within their scheme.
