Operation North State Plans 11th Annual Fishing Festival

Operation North State is preparing for its 11th Annual Peer Fishin’ Festival, scheduled for October 19-23 at the Oak Island Fishing Pier in Oak Island, North Carolina. This event offers wounded and disabled veterans an opportunity to fish along the Brunswick County coast for several days.

Organizers anticipate between 500 and 550 participants throughout the five-day festival, including veterans, their guests, volunteers, and sponsors. The festival is one of seven fishing events Operation North State plans to host across North Carolina in 2026. The organization noted that the Oak Island event originated from requests by veterans who had participated in other fishing programs statewide.

To participate, veterans must possess a Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating. Approximately 80% of the veterans expected to attend have disability ratings ranging from 80% to 100%. Fishing passes, necessary equipment, bait, and meals are provided to participating veterans and their guests at no cost.

Operation North State founder Terry Snyder stated that some veterans and their families have extended the annual event into a week-long trip to the area. The organization is also seeking volunteers to serve as pier mates, assisting veterans with fishing throughout the festival. Donations of food, services, and other supplies are also being accepted.

In addition to fishing, several activities are planned for the week. These include appearances by service and companion dogs, events honoring senior veterans, and a skydiving demonstration near the pier. The Oak Island Fire Department is also expected to display a large American flag from a ladder truck during a designated Red, White and Blue Day.

Operation North State indicates that a limited number of participant spots are still available. Veterans interested in attending can contact the organization for registration details.
