Johnny Depp May Return to Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp May Return to Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp is reportedly in discussions to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. This development comes from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who stated that conversations are underway and a screenplay is being developed, with hopes of bringing the project to fruition.

This potential return marks a shift from Depp’s previous stance. During a televised defamation trial in 2022 against his former wife, Amber Heard, Depp testified that Disney had removed him from the franchise. He also stated under oath that he would not play Sparrow again, even if offered a sum of $300 million and a million alpacas.

Depp first portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. This role became his most recognized and profitable, with the film grossing over $650 million globally. The franchise, inspired by a Disney World theme park ride, saw four sequels released between 2006 and 2017. It was the first film series to have two entries each earn over $1 billion, with the entire series generating more than $4.5 billion. The most recent film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017, earned nearly $800 million despite mixed reviews.

Depp’s career has been impacted by well-publicized legal challenges. Prior to the 2022 US defamation trial, he filed a libel lawsuit in the UK in 2020. A court in that case found that a newspaper’s characterization of him as a ‘wife-beater’ was substantially true. Following this verdict, Warner Bros. requested Depp’s resignation from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, even though filming for a third movie had already commenced. However, the jury in the 2022 US trial ruled in Depp’s favor, concluding that Heard had defamed him in a Washington Post editorial where she described herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse.

Since then, Depp has appeared as Louis XV in the 2023 French-language historical drama Jeanne du Barry and voiced a puffin in the 2024 animated feature Johnny Puff: Secret Mission. His upcoming role as Scrooge in Ebenezer, directed by Ti West and set for release in the UK and US in November, may indicate how audiences will receive his return to major film roles.
