AIKEN, S.C. — An Aiken County sheriff’s deputy is recovering and a woman is dead after a shooting on Scotch Lane in Aiken, S.C., on Monday, Oct. 5, state investigators said. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is handling the case at the sheriff’s office’s request.
According to SLED, deputies went to a home on Scotch Lane while looking into a hit-and-run in which a gray Chevrolet truck struck a convenience store. The truck was registered to a woman who lived at the home, and she had also been involved in a disturbance at a different convenience store earlier that day.
Sheriff’s officials said the call began around 2:48 p.m. at the RaceTrac on Columbia Highway North near Interstate 20. When deputies found the truck, the driver rammed a patrol car and fled, and a brief chase ended on Scotch Lane.
SLED said the woman opened her door, shot a deputy and then ran over the deputy with the truck before deputies returned fire. The deputy was hit in the legs, taken to Wellstar MCG Health and is in stable condition, a sheriff’s major said. The woman died at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. The county coroner identified her as Amanda Buckner, 38.
SLED said it is the 31st officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year and the third for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. Its findings will go to prosecutors for review.
