The Dallas Cowboys made a notable roster adjustment on Tuesday, September 1, by waiving quarterback Joe Milton III. This move occurred after the team successfully claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Milton, a third-year quarterback, had a strong preseason showing, demonstrating his arm strength and accuracy. Across three appearances, he recorded 271 passing yards and two touchdowns. His performance led many to believe he had secured the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott, ahead of Sam Howell.
However, the Cowboys’ decision to add Demercado necessitated a corresponding roster move, leading to Milton’s departure. Milton was a sixth-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2024. Given the timing of this waiver, coming after teams had largely finalized their rosters, there is a possibility the Cowboys might attempt to re-sign him if he clears waivers.
