Graniteville, South Carolina – A 53-year-old man from Graniteville has died following injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash that occurred on April 18. Mark Carr was receiving medical treatment at Wellstar MCG Health hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where he passed away on Sunday night at 9:01 p.m.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables reported that Carr’s death was the result of injuries inflicted during a motorcycle accident that took place around 12:50 a.m. on Sudlow Lake Road, close to the intersection with Mustang Drive in Burnettown, near Midland Valley High School.

At the time of the crash, Carr was riding a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle. Initial investigations reveal that the motorcycle veered off the roadway, subsequently crashing into a mailbox, a ditch, and then a concrete culvert. The impact ejected Carr from the motorcycle, leading to serious injuries that necessitated his emergency transportation to the hospital.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are currently investigating the cause of the incident. As of now, it remains unconfirmed whether Carr was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

This tragic incident is part of a larger trend of fatalities on South Carolina roads. As of Sunday, there have been 278 reported deaths in the state in 2025 alone. In comparison, 948 people lost their lives in crashes throughout South Carolina last year. Aiken County has reported at least six traffic-related deaths in 2025, a concerning statistic when viewed in light of the 28 deaths recorded in the county due to crashes in 2024.

The frequency of motorcycle accidents in South Carolina raises ongoing concerns about roadway safety and the behavior of motorcycle riders in the state. Authorities continue to call for heightened awareness and adherence to safety regulations to mitigate the number of incidents that can lead to fatal outcomes.

The state continues to seek solutions to improve safety on its roads and protect both motorcycle riders and motorists alike. The push for better safety measures and awareness campaigns remains crucial as communities strive to lower the rate of traffic fatalities and ensure safer road conditions for all users.
