The chase began around 8:30 p.m. when a deputy clocked a gray 2014 Ford Fusion traveling 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. Upon attempting to perform a traffic stop, the driver, who was found to be unlicensed, initially pulled over but then fled the scene after the deputy requested the vehicle’s keys.

While pursuing the Ford Fusion, deputies quickly lost sight of the vehicle and terminated the chase near Old Jackson Highway. However, it was reported that the Fusion ran a red light at an intersection near the Kimberly-Clark plant and subsequently collided with a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban.

Emergency responders arrived to find the Fusion engulfed in flames. Body camera footage revealed the swift actions taken by deputies and other first responders. A female passenger managed to escape the wreckage and fled the scene, but she was apprehended shortly after. Unfortunately, three males, including Jaquavis Baptiste, were trapped inside the car at the time of the crash.

Baptiste was taken to Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta, where he was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m. Following the incident, an autopsy is scheduled for the upcoming week in Newberry to determine the exact cause of death.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, several firearms were recovered from the wreckage of the Ford Fusion. Currently, the owner of these firearms has not been identified. Other passengers inside the vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital; however, their conditions have not been publicly disclosed.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the details surrounding the crash. This ongoing inquiry involves multiple agencies, including the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
