AIKEN, SC – The University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) held its Commencement Ceremony on May 7, 2025, honoring over 400 graduates and marking significant milestones for the institution. Among those recognized were the initial cohort of the USCA LIFE program, designed for college-age students with intellectual or developmental disabilities, as well as four U.S. Army Cadets from the USC Aiken ROTC Pacer Detachment who were commissioned as Second Lieutenants.

Chancellor Daniel Heimmermann opened the ceremony, highlighting the success and achievements of the LIFE program, which celebrated 13 graduating students. The graduates received the Promoting Academic, Community & Employment Readiness (PACER) Credential, underlining their readiness for post-college opportunities.

A standing ovation greeted the four newly commissioned officers: Christian Brown, Danielle Brown, Casey Barrett, and Jalen Tangaan, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to military service. The ceremony reflected a sense of pride within the academic community as graduates and families gathered to commemorate the occasion.

During his address, Chancellor Heimmermann encouraged the Class of 2025 to embrace their roles as leaders in the community, instilling hope and fostering positive change. In a parallel message, University of South Carolina President Michael Amiridis urged graduates to advocate for education and seek unity in times of division.

The ceremony also recognized outstanding achievements, honoring Rachel Eubanks, a dual-degree student in Psychology and English who maintained a perfect GPA throughout her studies and was named the Outstanding Senior Student. Her academic commitment exemplifies the values upheld by the university.

Another notable graduate was Billy Jacobs, a 53-year-old veteran who received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with summa cum laude honors. Jacobs shared his inspiring journey of balancing work, family, and academic pursuits, motivating others with his story. Additionally, Richy Modugu, the former president of the Student Government Association, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in computer science, concentrating on cyber security. Modugu plans to pursue a master’s degree to continue his education beyond undergraduate studies.

The Commencement Ceremony took place at the USCA Convocation Center, which accommodated a large audience of family and friends excited to celebrate their graduates’ accomplishments. Traditional elements of the ceremony, such as the graduates moving their tassels from right to left and the singing of the university’s alma mater, “We Hail Thee, Carolina,” contributed to the celebratory atmosphere.

As graduates reveled in their success, personal stories emerged, showcasing the diverse experiences of students from different backgrounds. Many caps were adorned with motivational quotes and personal messages, reflecting individual journeys and aspirations. A graduate received a heartfelt hug from a well-wisher amidst the celebration, emphasizing the strong community ties that unite the USCA family.

Musical contributions from the USCA Wind Ensemble, conducted by Todd Jenkins, added a celebratory ambiance to the event, further enhancing the experience for all attendees.
