News Summary

Aiken Senior Life Services is introducing an ambassador program to meet the growing needs of seniors in North Augusta. As the senior population continues to rise, the organization aims to enhance community engagement and awareness of its services, including Meals on Wheels and transportation. The kick-off event also highlighted fundraising efforts to bridge a significant funding gap and recruited volunteers to promote services. Despite challenges from low attendance at dining sites and rising costs, community support is emerging to bolster these essential services.

North Augusta – Aiken Senior Life Services is rolling out a new ambassador program aimed at addressing the increasing needs of the senior population in North Augusta. Predicting that by 2030, approximately 25% of the population will be over the age of 65, the organization has identified the need for greater community engagement and awareness of available services for seniors.

The kick-off event for the ambassador program also served as a capital campaign geared toward fundraising to support crucial services for seniors. Senior organization representatives discussed this initiative with local officials, including North Augusta City Councilwoman Pat Carpenter, during a meeting at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Aiken Senior Life Services provides a wide range of services for seniors in Aiken County, including transportation, Meals on Wheels, and various enrichment programs. In the past year alone, the Meals on Wheels program delivered over 36,000 hot meals to homebound seniors in North Augusta, operating five days a week at multiple sites across the community, which currently has the most meal routes at a total of eight.

Despite the high population of seniors in North Augusta, there have been concerns regarding low attendance at congregate dining sites. The ambassador program aims to recruit 60 volunteers by September to help promote these valuable services and encourage greater community engagement.

As demand for services grows, the organization currently faces a wait list, indicating a need for additional volunteers to meet the community’s needs. Confusion has been noted between Aiken Senior Life Services and Community Ministries of North Augusta, further complicating the information flow regarding available resources.

Aimee Hanna, executive director of Aiken Senior Life Services, has emphasized that transportation, hot meals, and social activities are essential for the overall well-being of seniors. However, the organization is experiencing financial challenges attributed to delayed federal funding, rising food prices, and increased transportation costs, resulting in a $150,000 shortfall.

In response to these financial difficulties, the community has rallied to support Aiken Senior Life Services, raising approximately $15,000 through donations spurred by social media outreach. The director has also indicated that assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services is pending, which could help address some of the funding gaps the organization is currently facing.

Aiken Senior Life Services has been operational since 1971 and serves the entirety of Aiken County, an area comparable in size to Rhode Island. This long-standing organization remains committed to improving the lives of seniors and addressing their needs amidst a changing demographic landscape.
