Aiken, South Carolina – The community is mourning the unexpected passing of Dr. Madeline Kurrasch, a renowned pioneer in dentistry and aviation, who died on April 6, 2025, while living with family in South Carolina. Dr. Kurrasch, who was 83 years old, left behind a legacy of innovation, education, and compassion that touched both her professional and personal life.

Born on June 19, 1941, in Minnesota, Madeline Kurrasch was the daughter of Ken and Valborg Kurrasch. She graduated from Marshall High School in Minneapolis, where she showcased her academic aptitude. She went on to earn her degree in arts and education from the University of Minnesota, before pursuing further studies at UCLA, where she obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.

Dr. Kurrasch specialized as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist in Torrance, California, where she dedicated her career to helping patients restore their smiles and improve their quality of life. Alongside her clinical practice, she shared her knowledge and expertise as an Assistant Professor of Removable Prosthetics at UCLA. Her influence in the profession culminated in her being elected as the first woman to serve as President of the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics.

In addition to her distinguished career in dentistry, Dr. Kurrasch had a profound passion for aviation. She was an active member of the 99s, an international organization dedicated to promoting women in aviation. Dr. Kurrasch not only enjoyed flying but also excelled in competitive air racing. She flew a Grumman Tiger before transitioning to her dream aircraft, a V Tail Bonanza. Her enthusiasm for flying underscored her adventurous spirit and unwavering determination.

After retiring from her dental practice, Madeline revisited her creative side through painting and became actively involved with organizations like Love on 4 Paws. She was particularly devoted to her service dog, Prince, who accompanied her on visits to hospitals and nursing homes, spreading joy and companionship to those in need.

Dr. Kurrasch is remembered not only for her professional accomplishments but also for her compassionate heart and generous spirit. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Jimmy. She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Paredes (Leonard), and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish her memory.

In honor of her life and legacy, a Celebration of Life will take place on July 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM at La Venta Inn, located at 796 Via del Monte, Palos Verdes, California. A lunch reception will follow the memorial service to allow attendees to share stories and reminisce about Madeline’s impact on their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dr. Kurrasch’s honor to a pet rescue facility of one’s choice, reflecting her lifelong commitment to animal welfare. The funeral services are being managed by Shellhouse Funeral Home, Inc., located at 924 Hayne Ave., Aiken, SC 29801. Dr. Kurrasch’s contributions to dentistry and her dedication to giving back to the community serve as a lasting legacy of compassion and excellence for all whose lives she touched.
