Access is primarily via SC-191 (Jefferson Davis Highway) from the south or via US-1 from Aiken or Augusta. Modern Graniteville has layered suburban residential development from the mid-20th century over this historic framework, and the community is increasingly influenced by the growth of Aiken Technical College and Fox Creek High School as major community anchors. ## History Graniteville was established in 1845 by Charleston merchant and textile entrepreneur William Gregg, who built the Graniteville Manufacturing Company mill as South Carolina's first planned industrial community. Gregg's model — providing workers with housing, a school, and a church in exchange for mill employment — was influential in the development of the broader Southern textile mill village tradition.
