A snowy landscape in Aiken, SC

News Summary

Aiken County residents should brace themselves for an unseasonably cold week with temperatures dropping into the low 20s and a possibility of light snow. With a cold weather advisory in effect, remote learning is set for local schools. Prepare for freezing conditions and keep warm as winter settles in Aiken.

Bundle Up, Aiken! An Unseasonably Cold Week Awaits

Hey there, Aiken County! It seems we’ve got some chilly weather on the way this week that will definitely get you reaching for that cozy sweater and hot cocoa. Yes, you heard it right—instead of the typical January mildness, we’re about to embrace some cold winter vibes that could include a little bit of snow!

What’s Happening?

Mark your calendars for January 21 and 22, 2025, because a low-pressure system is set to sprinkle some snowfall across South Carolina, affecting our lovely neck of the woods. So, let’s talk temperatures: forecasted daytime highs are barely scraping the surface of the 30s—as in, mid-30s at best—with nighttime lows chilling down into the low 20s. Get ready for a real winter experience, Aiken!

Cold Weather Advisory Alerts

The National Weather Service has waved a cold weather advisory flag from midnight on January 20 through 10 a.m. on January 21. This means it’s time to keep that winter coat close, as you may find yourself feeling much colder than the actual temperatures due to wind chill factors. On January 21, we’re looking at wind chills plummeting to a frigid 10-15°F—that’s ice-cold, even for us!

Snow on the Horizon?

Now, let’s get down to the snow details! Meteorologists are forecasting a 30% chance of snow after 2 p.m. on January 21, so you might want to have your cameras ready, just in case! While it’s likely to be light, we could see accumulations of “between zero and a half inch.” However, if you live eastward in Barnwell or Bamberg counties, it looks like you’ll get a bit more snow than we will.

But wait, there’s more! Aiken might even experience a 50% chance of light snow before 1 a.m. on January 22, with another high near 36°F for the day. The lows for January 22 will settle down to around 22°F, which means you’ll want to keep those thermal socks handy!

What About Schools and Your Pets?

On a practical note, several local schools, including Aiken County schools, are shifting to remote learning on January 21 due to the weather conditions. That means kids will be learning from the comfort of their home instead of braving the cold! Aiken Technical College and Augusta Technical College have also decided to close their doors on January 21, transitioning all classes to remote formats.

Parents, take note: the upcoming days could also lead to plumbing issues with the potential for freezing pipes, so be proactive—think of insulating those vulnerable pipes! And don’t forget about your furry friends; it’ll be wise to bring them indoors as it’s going to get quite cold out there.

Looking Ahead

The good news is that once we get through this chilly patch, temperatures are expected to warm up gradually. By the weekend, we should experience some relief, with highs reaching the mid-40s on Friday and Saturday, progressing to the 50s by Sunday and Monday. So stick it out, and we’ll soon be back to milder weather.

So, Aiken, prepare for this cold snap! Stay warm, stay safe, and keep your snow gear ready. Winter is officially here, and it’s bringing some surprises with it!
