On February 13, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the museum will host a calendar-signing reception to celebrate the launch of its inaugural 12-month 2025 black history calendar entitled, “Augusta Achievers – Celebrating Augusta’s Black History: Trailblazers, Gamechangers, Luminaries, Pacesetters.”

What’s even more thrilling is that the event will feature an opportunity for attendees to meet the wonderful honorees highlighted in the calendar. These remarkable individuals are recognized for their invaluable contributions to Augusta’s history and community. They span various fields, including business, education, medicine, arts, and politics.
This inaugural calendar is not just a collection of beautiful images and dates; it is described as a historical piece and a collector’s item that will be produced annually. Each year, the calendar aims to shine a light on different sets of Augusta’s African American history makers.
Exceptional Achievers Featured
Among the calendar’s featured individuals are some really inspiring figures. There’s Dr. Mallory Millender, a journalist and professor at Paine College, who has made significant strides in education and research. Then, there’s Dr. Mac Bowman, a well-known cardiologist, serving the Augusta community at Piedmont Health Care.
Also prominently featured is Dr. Ebony Brown, founder of Brown Girls Code, making waves in the tech field. The arts are represented by none other than Russell Joel Brown, a Broadway actor and founder of Boys with a Future, and Velvet Perry, the Vice President and General Manager at Perry Broadcasting.
The list also pays homage to outstanding community leaders like Hawthorne Welcher, Jr., the Director of Augusta Housing and Development, as well as the late Carrie Mays and Willie Mays III, both renowned entrepreneurs and politicians.
Education and community service take a front seat with figures like Marion Barnes, a retired principal, and former Richmond County School Board President, and Tyrone Butler, founder of the Augusta Mini Theatre. The calendar also honors judith Simon-Butler, who serves as Deputy Director and Drama Instructor at the same theatre, among others.

Earnestine Robinson, vital as Board Liaison Support Staff, and Denzell Howard, an emerging filmmaker and senior at the John S. Davidson Fine Arts School, are also noteworthy mentions. Furthermore, the calendar pays tribute to the late B.L. Dent and R.A. “Papa” Dent, who broke ground in local government roles after Reconstruction.
The contributions extend to educational leadership with Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, the recently retired President of Paine College, rounding out the incredible list of honorees.
