Langley, Aiken County – An EF1 tornado struck Langley in Aiken County early Monday morning at approximately 3:26 a.m., causing significant damage to local infrastructure and leaving dozens without power. The tornado impacted several key structures, including the Langley Fire Department building, where the bays were severely damaged, rendering some emergency responses difficult.
According to Langley Fire Assistant Chief Harold Cain, the fire department’s fire pump sustained extensive damage, and access to their engine was hindered by demolished bay doors. In addition to the fire department, numerous nearby structures suffered collateral damage. Residents reported that carports were scattered across yards and roads, creating hazardous conditions as recovery efforts began.
The tornado’s path affected multiple roads, notably Augusta Road at Dunba Street, which remained closed until approximately 5:15 p.m. New Holland Road and Farmfield Road were also closed, while updates regarding their statuses were pending. Compounding the storm damage, Price Avenue in the city of Aiken was closed due to flooding, further complicating travel in the area.
As the aftermath of the storm unfolded, Dominion Energy reported that at least 42 customers were left without power in Langley. Local authorities responded promptly, with Aiken County deputies attending to multiple downed tree incidents along Langley Dam Road, illustrating the extent of the tornado’s impact on the region.
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for both Aiken and Edgefield counties, warning residents about the risks of flash flooding due to excessive rainfall associated with the storm. Residents were advised to steer clear of flooded roadways and seek higher ground, along with following evacuation instructions if necessary.
Aiken County Public Schools took precautionary measures by transitioning to e-learning due to the forecast of severe weather. School employees reported to their worksites on a delayed schedule, ensuring safety and contingency plans amid the ongoing storm disruptions.
Residents described the tornado experience with fear and anxiety. Many reported hearing a noise reminiscent of a train, which signaled the storm’s approach. This prompted some to urge family members to seek shelter quickly. As the storm raged on, neighbors recounted their terror and the aftermath of lost parts of their homes and vehicles due to fallen trees. Fortunately, despite the property damage, there were no reported injuries.
In unrelated community efforts, volunteers from Bridgestone and Rolls Royce took part in a cleanup initiative at Sage Mill Industrial Park on May 22, collecting 90 bags of litter with the help of 50 volunteers. This community cleanup showcases the collective efforts of Langley residents to maintain their environment amidst challenging weather conditions.
As recovery operations continue following the tornado’s disruption, residents and local authorities remain focused on addressing the damage and restoring normalcy to their community.
