News Summary

Aiken County is facing a surge in food insecurity among children following the end of the summer EBT program. In response, local organizations, including Serenity Charity Club and Aiken County Parks and Recreation, have launched initiatives like the Summer Break Cafe, providing free meals to students. With nearly 200 meals distributed on the first day of the program, the community is rallying to support children during the summer months. Additional programs from the Golden Harvest Food Bank and local school districts further aim to combat hunger in the area.

Aiken County, S.C. is experiencing a rise in food insecurity as the summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) program, which provided $120 in grocery benefits for eligible children, has been discontinued. In response to this pressing issue, local organizations have stepped up to ensure that children continue to have access to nutritious meals during the summer months.

The Serenity Charity Club has joined forces with Aiken County Parks and Recreation to launch the Summer Break Cafe, a program that offers free breakfast and lunch to local students while school is not in session. The initiative aims to combat hunger and provide not only sustenance but also a place for children to gather, play, and enjoy their summer.

Since its inauguration on June 2, the Summer Break Cafe has seen a rapid response from the community, with nearly 200 meals distributed on its very first day. As the program progresses throughout the summer, officials anticipate even higher participation rates, reflecting the critical need for food assistance among local families.

Meals provided through the program include popular options such as hot dogs and pizza, in addition to healthy snacks. To obtain these meals, children simply need to present a valid student ID or report card. The Summer Break Cafe is expected to remain operational until July 18, providing a reliable source of nourishment for students throughout the summer break.

Complementing the efforts of the Summer Break Cafe, the Golden Harvest Food Bank is also playing a pivotal role in addressing hunger in the area through its Summer Harvest Feeding Program and Summer Sprouts Program, which aim to provide supplementary meals to children during the warmer months.

In addition to these initiatives, the Aiken County Public School District has introduced the Healthy Meals at no Cost program, which caters to students aged 18 and under, as well as those with disabilities up to 21 years old. This program, which started in June, allows children to enjoy breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., until its conclusion on June 27. Adults are also welcome to participate in the meals for a nominal fee of $3.10 for breakfast and $4.85 for lunch.

This collective response to food insecurity comes amid heightened concern as the summer EBT benefits come to an end. In Berkeley County, the Seamless Summer Option is being implemented, providing free meals at schools from June 2 to July 24, aligning with similar goals of reducing hunger among students.

All meals provided across these various programs adhere to federal nutrition guidelines, ensuring that children receive balanced and healthy food options. To facilitate flexible dining experiences, some meals can be taken away, while others are required to be consumed on-site.

Local organizations are encouraged to collaborate with school districts and community programs to further enhance efforts in feeding initiatives during the summer months. As initiatives like the Summer Break Cafe and Healthy Meals at no Cost unfold, the community remains vigilant in addressing rising food insecurity and supporting the nutritional needs of its youngest residents.
