Aiken County, SC has reported two fatal accidents over the weekend, which have claimed the lives of a 28-year-old motorcyclist and a teenager following a traffic stop and chase.
Motorcycle Crash Claims Life
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating a tragic two-vehicle accident that took place on Saturday evening at the intersection of Whiskey Road and Chukker Creek Road. The victim, Summer Poole, a resident of New Ellenton, was riding her 2003 Honda motorcycle southbound on Whiskey Road when the collision occurred around 6:09 p.m.
According to the coroner’s office, the Honda motorcycle collided with a northbound Honda Civic that pulled into its path. Poole was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:53 p.m. An autopsy for Poole has been scheduled for next week in Newberry as part of the ongoing investigation, which the Aiken Department of Public Safety is also assisting with.
Teen Dies Following Traffic Stop Chase
In a separate incident, a fatal crash following a brief police chase has resulted in the death of a 16-year-old identified as Jaquavis Baptiste from Barnwell County. The events unfolded on Thursday night, around 8:30 p.m., when a deputy attempted to stop a gray 2014 Ford Fusion for speeding—specifically, driving at 72 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Initially complying, the driver of the Fusion fled when the deputy requested the keys after the car was stopped. The deputy lost sight of the vehicle but soon discovered the Fusion crashed a quarter-mile away at a location on Old Jackson Highway.
The Fusion had collided with a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban after reportedly running a red light. Upon arrival, emergency responders found three males trapped inside the wreckage. Jaquavis Baptiste was in the front passenger seat and was still alive when transported to Wellstar MCG Health. However, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m.
Crash Aftermath and Investigation
The crash scene was engulfed in flames, and one female passenger fled on foot but was later detained by deputies. An array of firearms was recovered from the wrecked vehicle, although the ownership and intent of possession are currently unclear. The identities of the other passengers have not been made public, and their medical conditions remain unreported.
The investigations into the circumstances surrounding both fatal incidents are ongoing. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, S.C. Highway Patrol, and the Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are all involved in the inquiries. This weekend’s incidents highlight ongoing concerns over traffic safety in the region, as officials urge drivers to adhere to traffic laws.
Background Context
